Considering Originality: Inspiration Over Imitation
Growing up one of my biggest pet peeves was when other kids would copy me. From picking the same color popsicle that I had picked to deciding that my favorite song was now their favorite song, it would always get under my skin. Looking back I can acknowledge that for impressionable youth, it can be easier to do whatever the next person is doing, rather than decide to make decisions for yourself. I can also acknowledge that a majority of my annoyance came from the maturity that I lacked at the time.
Moving into my adult life, I am no longer bothered by others when they copy small things. I have grown to understand that all the elements and skills that I possess have been combined and groomed by my experiences in a unique way. A way that allows for my work and self expression to emerge and be distinguishable from those who may try to imitate it. This unique combination of elements and skills differs for everyone, and when embraced the result is a world with a wide variety of artistry to admire. With this being said I can still clearly decipher when individuals copy the creativity and artistry of others, myself included. The feeling is still unsettling, but rather than become bothered it has led me to encourage others to be themselves, to create themselves, and to practice drawing inspiration rather than learning imitation.
To my readers who are also artists and creators, there will be times when you receive admiration for your work, only to later find those same admirers producing work of their own that will seem all too familiar to you. Do not feel threatened, limited or discouraged. What's for you, is just that.. for you. Others will do their best to draw bits and pieces from the masterpiece you are so intricately putting together, however because they are not you, it will not have the same effect.
On the other hand, there will also be times when you will so clearly see the fruits of others' creativity and innovation, that you may feel tempted to replicate what they have done, or feel as though you are behind, and moving at an inadequate pace. Recognize that you possess all the skills you need to generate your own gems. Be inspired to perfect what you do, and the rest will come with time.

Who said you can't layer up and still keep cool? My flared jeans were purchased from a local vintage shop, and my sheer robe and white mesh sweater are both thrifted. Chelsea boots by asos, belt by timberland. When summer just won't quit, you've got to adjust accordingly!
