Letters from TC: Turning 20

Letters from TC: Turning 20

This past week, I was blessed to make it to my 20th birthday.  However, in the weeks leading up to that day I wasn't in the birthday spirit very much at all, and even on the morning of April 12th, I still didn't feel like it was a day to be celebrated.

If you are in college, or have been in the past, then you know exactly what I mean when I say I feel like I've been doing everything, while at the same time doing nothing.  On social media we are able to so visibly see how others are following their dreams and moving through the chapters of their books.  In the world of young entrepreneurs and creatives, 20 is the new 25.  We all are working towards our dreams and from looking at my iPhone screen it sometimes appears that everyone is moving at a much quicker rate, while I'm moving in slow motion.

These are the thoughts that swirled about in my head on the morning of my birthday last week.

"I'm twenty, but what do I have to show for it?"

"What's next?"

"Why hasn't everything fallen into place yet?"

As my day went on and my interactions with others began, I realized that just because my book looks a little different right now, doesn't mean that it isn't being written.  It also doesn't mean that it won't be a great story when it's done.  At twenty, I don't have all the answers to my own questions, and I'm not supposed to.

Comparison truly is the killer of all joy, and on my 20th birthday I decided that I will only compare myself to the future man I aspire to be.  I am setting specific goals and working towards them, smiling for no reason, cherishing my interactions with others, and wearing my best outfits while doing so.

Cheers to twenty, cheers to not knowing, and cheers to figuring it out.
