Starting With What You Have

Starting With What You Have

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
— Theodore Roosevelt

This is something I often have to remind myself of. I constantly feel as though there is so much more I could do creatively, if I just had more. More access, more space, more time. The drawback of that way of thinking, is that even if I decide to put in the work to achieve those things I lack, I will always be in search of something I don’t yet have. I look back on certain periods of my life and think about all the things I could have done with what I thought ‘wasn’t enough’ at the time.

You want to be a photographer, but you need a better camera to start.

You want to be a writer, but you don’t feel as though you have the credentials.

You want to start a clothing brand, but your design skills aren’t where you feel they should be.

To all of these I have one thing to say: who cares! Start anyway!

Begin taking pictures with your phone, and make them so good that people won’t believe they were taken on a phone. Read as much as possible and write until you get better. Have people you respect review and provide feedback on your work. Start your clothing brand with the designs you already have. Bring your ideas to life so that you can see the changes you need and want to make.

In order to get better, you have to get started.

Starting with less allows you to be appreciative of more. Starting with less allows you to look back and admire the progress you’ve made. Starting with less is still starting.

What are you really waiting for?
